10 Essential Tips for New Christians: Navigating Your Faith Journey

  1. READ YOUR BIBLE EVERYDAY- Romans 15:4 "Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God's promises to be fulfilled."

I can wholeheartedly say that from my own experience, skipping daily Bible reading can lead to waning interest, which is definitely not what you want as a new Christian! But when I do stray from my routine, I quickly realize it and pray fervently to reignite that hunger I once had. I push myself to dive back into reading, and soon enough, I find joy in it all over again. On the bright side, immersing myself in the Bible every day transforms my outlook, boosts my attitude, and lifts my mood tremendously!

  2. PRAY SEVERAL TIMES A DAY- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

Prayer is a way to communicate with God, ask for help, strengthen faith and express gratitude and repentance.

  3. KEEP A JOURNAL-

While I don't have a specific verse for this, it's incredibly useful to remember verses that speak to your heart! Journaling is such a therapeutic practice, especially when you pour out your worries onto paper—it's like crafting a prayer through your pen.

I absolutely love documenting my progress on my faith journey in my journal. It's amazing to look back and see just how much I've grown! And the best part? It's entirely up to you if you want to share it with anyone!

  4. GET BAPTIZED! Acts 2:38-41 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Chat with anyone who has experienced adult baptism, and they'll eagerly share just how incredible the feeling is!

  5. FIND A CHURCH YOU LIKE AND GO! Hebrews 10:25 "Do not stop going to church meetings. Encourage one another, especially as the Day approaches"

1 Corinthians 12:14–20 "For a church body to function properly, all of its “body parts” need to be present and working"

Ephesians 4:11–13 "We should be involved in some type of ministry to others, using the spiritual gifts God has given us"

Psalm 122:1"I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”"

    Acts 2:42

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer"

There are SO MANY people who will say you don't need to go to church to be a Christian. Well, let me put it this way...technically, no, you don't HAVE to, but it ties back to my first point: if you don't read your Bible, you might lose interest altogether. Church offers some amazing benefits! A) It keeps you accountable. B) It gives you a sense of belonging. C) With the Holy Spirit in you, you'll absolutely LOVE going to church. D) You'll learn A TON. And hey, some people try out a few churches before finding the perfect fit. There are so many different denominations and even non-denominational churches. So get out there and find your spiritual home!

  1. When you find a church you love, GET INVOLVED!

My favorite church offers Core Classes that dive into essential, yet incredibly important teachings about the Bible and the love of Jesus! They have various levels designed to help you flourish in your faith journey. And guess what? They're absolutely free! Plus, most churches offer volunteer opportunities, providing a fantastic way to serve and connect with amazing people.

  2. START MEMORIZING BIBLE VERSES- Psalm 119:11: "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you"

Deuteronomy 11:18: "So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine"

Luke 11:28: "Blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice"

Memorizing scripture can help you grow in your faith, and it can also help you respond to temptation and difficulties.

Benefits of memorizing scripture

Helps you resist temptation: Memorized scripture can help you resist temptation by providing you with the words to stand firm in your faith.

Helps you grow in your faith: Memorizing scripture can help you grow in your knowledge, love, and obedience to God.

Helps you respond to difficulties: Memorized scripture can help you respond to difficulties in an appropriate manner.

Helps you feel encouraged: Memorized scripture can help you feel encouraged and comforted.

8. GIVE THANKS 1 Thessalonians 5:18 "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus"

Ephesians 5:20 "And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ"

Guess what? When you intentionally embrace gratitude, it actually reduces your stress and worry! It's amazing! Make it a daily habit to appreciate all your blessings. Try making a list if that helps. You'll be astonished at how your outlook can transform!

  1. FORGIVE  Colossians 3:12-13 “You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you.”

This is a challenging task, and that's completely normal. Often, the most important actions are the hardest to undertake. Forgiveness doesn't mean allowing someone to mistreat us or giving them a second chance. You can seek God's help in forgiving someone. Forgiveness sometimes requires practice and plenty of prayer.

  2. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE-

The Holy Spirit is incredibly powerful! When you embrace Christ as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit fills you and transforms you. You'll be excited to change, even though you might still stumble. We're all sinners, and perfection awaits us in Heaven. Our Heavenly Father showers us with grace every day, so remember to extend some grace to yourself too.
